Based off of the devotional Everything Counts by Steven Case
Today is Day 5 of the year 2010. Some of you just started school and some are waiting for tomorrow. A new year is a great time to start something new or leave something old behind. In the Gospels Jesus is asked by a rich young ruler what he must do in order to inherit the kingdom of heaven. Jesus tells the rich man that he must give away all of his wealth. The walks away from Jesus and from inheriting the kingdom of God because he refused to give up some things here on earth for a better tomorrow and a better forever.
If you want to follow Jesus farther everyday I can guarantee that you are going to have to give something up. When we give up things in order to follow Jesus we are able to move when He calls. All these things we accumulate here on earth include bad habits, sin, desires, stuff, and even some good things weigh us down when God calls us and keep us from staying close to Jesus. This is why the Book of John talks about pruning the branches. Sometimes we must prune things out of our life in order to remain in Him.
As you close this post and navigate away pray that you can close the book on some of the things in your past that are weighing you down. Pray that you will be a new creation this year. Pursue God this year with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all of your strength.
